Introduction

I first encountered Starman, in the late 1980s when it was shown erratically at the usual late 11.30 pm time slot reserved for science fiction (but only if the sport isn't on). I was fairly lukewarm about the series and remained lukewarm when it aired on foxtel in the mid 1990s in Australia. I found it overly sentimental and a bit too mushy. But that didn't stop me taping it, avid science fiction fan that I am.

However while culling my extensive tape collection in November 2005, I casually threw a tape in the VCR. This time I was completely hooked. Underneath the mushiness I found a genuine core (although I still have to draw the line at some aspects of the Christmas episode!). One of the things that particularly struck me in the series was its now unfashionable ethos that there are things in life which are more important than money. There is also for me a degree of identification with the peripatetic life of the Starman and his son, having recently started moonlighting as a housesitter. (They even use this nice word 'peripatetic' in the series - episode 12).

This series has not as yet been released on commercial DVD. The production company claim there is not enough interest in the series. If you would like to register a vote to ask for a commercial release please visit TV Shows on DVD.
