Books and articles

These books and articles contain material related to films Walken appears in. These books are available through various online and other bookshops.

Brenez, Nicole (1998) De la figure en général et du corps en particulier: L'invention figurative au cinéma, Paris, Bruxelles: DeBoeck Université.

Abstract (in French)
Review by William D. Routt on The Screening the Past site. March 2000.

This superb book, a monumental slab of reseach and interesting ideas, includes a chapter on King of New York titled 'Frankly White', pp. 226-38. It also includes an analysis of Walken's acting performance in the film, pp. 272-3. A translation of this particular passage into English is reproduced on line both on this site and on the Senses of Cinema site. The book also contains a brief passage on Heaven's Gate, p.175.

Falzon, Christopher (2002) Philosophy Goes to the Movies: An Introduction to Philosophy, London: Routledge
Review Sydney Morning Herald
Review by Edward Lamberti on the Kamera.co.uk site.

This original and highly readable book is an introduction to philosophy using examples from film. As the author explains in the introduction, it is intended for those who are unfamiliar with philosophy, as a resource for teachers of philosophy and also as a way of using philosophy to make sense of and talk about film. It includes a chapter titled 'Antz - social and political philosophy'. Walken of course plays a small role voicing one of the animated characters in this film.

Hunter, Jack (ed.) (2000), Christopher Walken: Movie Top Ten, Creation Books International. No town of publication is listed - presumably London.

This book contains short articles of varying quality by a number of authors on ten of Walken's films. Not all would agree on the choice of the top ten. In my opinion, Batman Returns is not a film that should figure on any top ten! The inclusion of The Addiction in which Walken plays a very small role is also open to debate. The book also suffers from poor editing with some glaring typos and insufficient bibliographical details for the references. There is also no background information provided for the authors. On the positive side, the book includes a number of large black and white photos from Walken's films, some mildly interesting discussion and useful snippets from interviews with Walken and associated film makers.
Films discussed include The Deer Hunter, The Dead Zone, Batman Returns, King of New York, The Comfort of Strangers, The Prophecy, The Addiction, Suicide Kings, Communion and Brainstorm.
Johnstone, Nick (2000) Abel Ferrara: The King of New York, London: Omnibus Press
Review by David Fear

Walken has played roles in four of Ferrara's films: King of New York, The Addiction, The Funeral and New Rose Hotel
